Braai League.

What if your braai could compete? We turned the social, competitive side of South African braai culture into a cross-platform community built around posts, Flames and the leaderboard.

The problem

Braai culture is already social and competitive, but no product had given those rituals a home of their own

South Africans already share braai photos, compare fires and talk a fair amount of nonsense about who does it best. Those behaviours live in group chats and generic social platforms, where they disappear as soon as the conversation moves on.

We saw an opportunity to make that culture persistent. The product needed to feel specifically made for braaiing, not like a food feed or a sports app dressed in braai language. It also had to create enough reason to return without turning a relaxed social ritual into a serious competition.

The outcome

We created Braai League as a cross-platform social competition product for iOS, Android and the web. The core loop is deliberately small: users post a braai, receive Flames, gain visibility, climb the leaderboard and compete for Braai of the Month. Around that loop sits the community layer — profiles, comments, mentions, sharing, badges, editorial content and notifications.

Kreate owned the product from concept through to public launch: positioning, brand, UX, UI, product design, roadmap, development, store presence and ongoing releases. We spent 1 year building and testing the product before its September 2025 launch, including extensive user testing in the lead-up. The product also includes an admin portal, over-the-air updates and its own notification engine, so the team can operate and improve it without treating every change as a new app-store release.

The audience is still small. That is honest. The early community has nevertheless shared 110 braais, given 457 Flames and posted 57 comments across 31 registered members. Braai League holds a 5.0 rating on both the Apple App Store and Google Play. The visual and verbal system keeps the product bold, playful and proudly South African without relying on the usual clichés. It should feel like mates talking around a fire, not a corporate sports platform.

How we got there

01

Turn a cultural behaviour into a product

We defined the opportunity around the social and competitive side of braai culture, then made the product’s position clear: it was not another generic photo-sharing platform.

02

Design the participation loop

We designed the core loop of posting, receiving Flames, gaining visibility and competing, then balanced it with social features that make the community feel alive.

03

Build the product ecosystem

We created the brand, product design system, Capacitor-powered iOS and Android frontends, web experience, admin portal, marketing site, content infrastructure and store presence.

04

Launch and iterate

We tested extensively before launching publicly across iOS, Android and the web in September 2025. Ongoing releases and optimisation continue, while unreleased work stays out of the case study.
